Iran's Kiarostami goes to Japan for latest film

CANNES, France (AP) ? Abbas Kiarostami has found inspiration far from home.

The Iranian director's films are routinely banned in his home country, whose Islamist government has arrested or barred several younger filmmakers from working.

The 72-year-old auteur has responded by looking abroad for inspiration. His last feature, "Certified Copy," was shot in Italy, and his new Cannes Film Festival entry "Like Someone in Love" was made in Tokyo, in Japanese and with a Japanese cast.

"In the past few years for fairly obvious reasons, perhaps, I had to work outside Iran," Kiarostami told reporters in Cannes on Monday, saying this presented him with a challenge. "How could I convey to you what I had in my imagination without resorting to geography?"

Kiarostami built a global reputation with simple stories told with passion and conviction in Iran-set films like "Life and Nothing More" and "Through the Olive Trees. He said now setting a story in Japan had allowed him to "prove what I'm deeply convinced of ? that we all share the same human condition."

"That runs against something I thought in the past," the director said. "I thought Japan and the Japanese must be the country and the people that were the most removed from me."

"Like Someone in Love" ? the title comes from an Ella Fitzgerald song ? involves a listless young student who moonlights as a call girl, her mechanic boyfriend and an elderly professor who becomes involved in her life. It unfolds in the bustle and neon of Tokyo, but retains Kiarostami's usual languid pace and naturalistic performances.

"We didn't receive a script. That's the first time that's happened," said Tadashi Okuno, who plays the professor. Rin Takanashi is the student and Ryo Kase ? who appeared in Gus Van Sant's "Restless" and Clint Eastwood's "Letters From Iwo Jima" ? plays her working-class boyfriend.

"He said we had to be ourselves, we had to be very natural. He didn't want a contrived character. That's why it was good for him to work with an actor like me ? because I don't know how to act that well," Okuno said.

Kiarostami fans will be happy to know the film also includes another of the director's staples ? scenes of characters talking and sometimes sleeping as they drive in cars.

Asked about his fondness for automotive settings, Kiarostami said a car is "a place like anywhere else. And I think it's even better than may other places. There are lots of advantages."

"People can't just escape from the conversation because they've got their seat belts on," he said. "If you don't have an answer you can't just stand up and walk away if you're in a car."

Kiarostami won Cannes' top prize, the Palme d'Or, in 1997 for "Taste of Cherry." But his new film has had a mixed reception. Some critics were bemused by its abrupt ending ? The Guardian newspaper's Peter Bradshaw felt "the curtain comes down with an arbitrary crash just as the drama was becoming interesting."

Kiarostami said he felt the ending was appropriate but he was a bit surprised that he got away with it.

"I expected the producers to say, 'Your film doesn't have an ending.' Then gradually I realized my film doesn't have a beginning, either," he said. "Then I realized that's what happens in real life."

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) ? A former Rutgers University student who used a webcam to spy on his gay roommate was sentenced Monday to just 30 days in jail ? a punishment that disappointed some activists but came as a relief to others who feared he would be made a scapegoat for his fellow freshman's suicide.

Dharun Ravi, 20, could have gotten 10 years behind bars for his part in a case that burst onto front pages when Tyler Clementi threw himself to his death off the George Washington Bridge.

Instead, Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman gave Ravi a month in jail, placed him on three years' probation and ordered him to get counseling and pay $10,000 toward a program to help victims of hate crimes.

"Our society has every right to expect zero tolerance for intolerance," the judge said.

Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said he will appeal the sentence, calling it insufficient.

The tear-filled sentencing touched on many of the issues that made the case heart-wrenching and legally complicated: anti-gay bullying, teen suicide, hate-crime laws in the fast-changing Internet age, and the uses and abuses of technology in the hands of young people.

Ravi did not speak in court but shed tears as his mother pleaded with the judge not to send him to prison. Afterward, Ravi, his family and his lawyers left court without comment. He is expected to appeal his conviction.

In handing down the sentence, the judge quoted an email from Clementi himself describing Ravi's conduct as "wildly inappropriate."

At the same time, Berman pointed out that Ravi was not charged in Clementi's suicide. He said Ravi has spent 20 months in "exile" since his arrest. And he suggested "hate crime" is a misnomer for what Ravi was convicted of: "I do not believe he hated Tyler Clementi."

He also said he has examined the bias intimidation laws in 39 states and found that New Jersey's is among the broadest. Most, he said, are used only to increase the sentences of people convicted of violent crimes.

The judge said he would recommend Ravi not be deported to his native India. Deportation is still a possibility, but a sentence of a year or more would have been more likely to trigger it.

Prosecutors had asked that Ravi be sent to prison; they did not say how much time he should get other than that it did not have to be the maximum. If prosecutors appeal the sentence, Ravi may not have to report to jail on May 31 as ordered.

New Jersey gay rights organization Garden State Equality expressed disappointment with the punishment. In a statement, chairman Steven Goldstein suggested that while the maximum would have been an act of "vengeance," 30 days was too light.

"This was not merely a childhood prank gone awry," Goldstein said.

Bill Dobbs, a New York gay rights activist who has long argued that hate-crime laws can be dangerous, said he believes the judge gave a short sentence in part in response to a backlash against the prosecution that became visible in recent weeks, including at a rally last week at New Jersey's Statehouse, where hundreds of people called for leniency.

"Law and order cannot solve social problems," he said. "If you put too much pressure on one person, you can crush someone on the receiving end."

Marc Poirier, a professor at Seton Hall Law School, said the judge skillfully found a middle ground. "Having no jail time would have been interpreted as being a slap on the wrist," he said. And a sentence of five to 10 years would be "out of control."

The case began in September 2010 when Ravi's randomly assigned roommate asked Ravi for the dorm room alone so that he and a guest could have privacy. Ravi went to a friend's room, and they used a computer to watch Clementi and another man kissing.

They told others about it through instant messages and tweets, with Ravi boasting: "I saw him making out with a dude. Yay."

When Clementi asked for privacy again two days later, Ravi agreed, then told friends how to access his webcam. But this time, the camera was not on when the guest came over. There was testimony both that Clementi unplugged it and that Ravi himself put it to sleep.

The next night, Clementi ? who learned he had been spied on ? committed suicide at age 18, leaving behind a final Facebook update: "jumping off the gw bridge, sorry."

Gay-rights activists held up Clementi as an example of the consequences of bullying gays. President Barack Obama himself weighed in on the tragedy.

Ravi was convicted in March of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation on the basis of sexual orientation ? an offense widely referred to as a hate crime ? and trying to cover his tracks by destroying text messages and tweets and tampering with a witness.

As for Clementi's suicide, his mother, Jane Clementi, told the judge she didn't know exactly why her son killed himself. And Ravi's lawyers argued that the trial was not fair because the judge did not give them details from Clementi's computer that may have explained it.

Ravi is being "demonized by the gay community, and they're associating whatever he did with the death of Tyler," said lawyer Steven Altman.

Clementi's father, Joe Clementi, told the judge that Ravi deserved to be punished, saying the young man saw his son as undeserving of basic human decency. The elder Clementi said Ravi "still does not get it" and has no remorse.

Ravi's mother, Sabitha Ravi, said in court that her son "doesn't have any hatred in his heart toward anybody."

"Dharun's dreams are shattered and he has been living in hell for the past 20 months," she said through tears, recounting how he has lost more than 20 pounds from an already-thin frame and how he only finds comfort with his little brother and his dog.

Before the trial, prosecutors had offered Ravi a plea bargain that called for no prison time. He turned it down.

Surprisingly and strangely fun.

Metal Fighter Miku starts from a ridiculous premise: assume that sometime in the future (one that looks rather like our own, yet has some amazingly well yet to be tech tucked away in odd corners) one of the most well loved sports in the planet is ? female pro wrestling, with the females in question in powered armor to make the combats more fascinating.

Add to this the standard stable of characters in fighting-anime ? the plucky main hero/heroine, the ?handsome/gorgeous one?, the ?tough one?, and the ?cute one?, and a vengeance bent on forcing a final confrontation, and you seem set for some pretty stupid, and pedestrian, fare.

Somehow, with all this vacant hostile to it, Miku (like its eponymous heroine) triumphs hostile to the odds. Here?s something endearing rather than cloying about the characters. Yes, we know their general type, but the writers manage to make them separate, if not tremendously original, characters. Miku keeps the spotlight most of the time, but the other characters ? even adversaries ? often get sufficient screen time to make us feel that they?re not just cardboard props for Miku?s journey. As time goes on, you get the feeling that ?something else? ? you can?t quite define what ? is vacant ON in this series, and that feeling gets stronger. Eventually, you find out, and while the ?something else? isn?t at all to no avail-of in anime, in THIS anime it comes as quite a gratifying surprise.

I was stunned to delight in this one ? cynical as I was about it ? and having come to appreciate it as the simple but worthy entertainment it is, am glad to recommend it to others here.

What do you get when you place four pretty girls in mech suits and send them into a excellent-looking planet of tag team wrestling? A sport to gain a huge following in Earth?s fictional future; and some fantastic fight scenes to mix in with the sweet tale and spunky laughs. Not quite the caliber of Ranma 1/2, but if you like that series, you?ll probably delight in this one, too.

An incredible series despite its age

I thought this show was awesome from the moment I first saw it, back when it first came out in VHS tapes long ago. To this day it remains in my Top 5 favorite anime of all time, but to most people this show is all but unknown.

Life made in 1994, this show is pretty ancient now, so don?t expect something visually on par with the best anime of today. Yet, when I compare it to other well-renowned anime of its time, such as Neon Genesis Evangelion made in 1995, this show is really yet to be of them in terms of how well it was made and the quality of the drawings. As others have said previously, the tale sounds a bit corny, but the show isn?t what it seems to be about at first glance. It?s more a show about a girl who is seriously training hard to be a real fighter, rather than life a show about fake wrestling.

The show is just well-made from an objective standpoint, despite a storyline that some might consider impossible to pull off. I reckon that?s why some of the previous reviewers found themselves enjoying this show in the end, despite low expectations.

Directing: 5 out of 5 stars. One of Akiyuki Shinbo?s oldest works. He is now a well-known anime director who has done many of Japan?s most well loved recent top anime, including Moonphase and Negima?! (the better remade version).
Tale: 5 out of 5 stars. But, this is just my take on it. I like the thought of a tale about a girl seriously training to be a real fighter. Some others might find that thought ridiculous or stupid, and I can really know.
Drawing style: 5 out of 5 stars. The character designer for Metal Fighter Miku was Takeshi Honda, who was also the lead keyframe animator for the entire Neon Genesis Evangelion series, a very small-renowned fact. The drawing style for this show is thus very similar to Evangelion and other Yoshiyuki Sadamoto works, something most people fail to notice, but the resemblance is obvious to me.
Drawing quality: 3 out of 5 stars. Normally pretty excellent quality, but episodes 3 and 8 have ultra degenerated, terrible drawings, where they indeed look like goonies just as a previous reviewer said!
Animation quality: 3 out of 5 stars. Nothing special either, but not overly cheap with the form-saving. Considering how ancient this show is, it?s easily up to standard.
Music: 5 out of 5 stars. BGM composed by well-renowned Japanese composer Kenji Kawai, who has composed music for countless anime series. The intro and ending songs, composed by someone else as is usually the case for anime, are incredible as well (it?s rare for anime to have both excellent BGM and excellent OP/ED songs).

Unfortunately, I do have some complaints regarding the quality of the DVD authoring. The opening and ending sequences weren?t done correctly and play at half-resolution (weird interlacing). The Japanese track of the show is low-quality mono of the typical 90?s Japanese announce standard. The English track is in stereo but the DVD authoring is messed up and the sound often clips when characters speak, which can really mess up your ears and speakers (don?t play the audio too loud if you listen to the English track).

Although this DVD set was released many years ago it?s still not that hard to find for some reason. Metal Fighter Miku was a fantastic buy 6 years ago. Nowdays though a lot of excellent anime come out as cheap boxsets?so I wouldn?t pay $40 for this if I?d never seen the show before. But I reckon it?s not hard to find this DVD set for $25 to $30 because it was over-printed?.so if you can find it at that price and believe in my review and don?t mind ?ancient anime from the 90?s? I strongly recommend this show.

FACEBOOK IPO LIVE: The social network goes public

It's Facebook's big day.

The site, which was born in a dorm room eight years ago and has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people, is making the most talked-about stock market debut in years.

9:15 a.m.

FLASHBACK: GOOGLE'S DEBUT

The last technology stock to go public with this level of attention was Google, which made its debut Aug. 19, 2004. Here's how The Associated Press covered it:

SAN JOSE, Calif. ? In the most highly anticipated Wall Street debut since the heady days of the dot-com boom, shares of Google surged nearly 20 percent on their first day of public trading Thursday as the quirky Internet company completed its much-hyped initial stock offering.

Despite the first-day jump, the debut generated much less money than the company envisioned after it launched an unorthodox auction designed to open the stock beyond large investors who typically get first crack at new stock issues.

Google shares finished the day at $100.34, up 18 percent, and the stock offering raised $1.67 billion. The company originally hoped to open at between $108 and $135, generating as much as $3.6 billion and making the company worth up to $36 billion.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT: CALIFORNIA CASH

Besides minting Internet billionaires, the Facebook IPO should provide a little help for the cash-starved state of California.

The state's nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office says the IPO will generate $1.6 billion to $2.6 billion for the state through the middle of next year as shareholders cash in their stock.

California badly needs the money: Gov. Jerry Brown said over the weekend that the projected state deficit has swelled to $15.7 billion for the coming fiscal year. In January, it was projected at $9.2 billion.

POP AND DROP

Several of last year's must-have IPO stocks aren't exactly must-haves anymore.

Pandora, an Internet radio company, went public June 15 at $20 a share. You could have bought the stock during the day for $26. It's now trading under $11.

Groupon, the online daily deal company, priced its stock at $20 a share on Nov. 4. It traded above $31 the first day and is now under $13.

And LinkedIn, a social network for professionals, more than doubled from its $45 offer price within minutes of hitting the market last May 19. It reached $122.70 on the first day before closing at $94.25. It's back to about $105.

THE KID BILLIONAIRE

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is selling about 30 million shares of Facebook as part of the initial public offering. At $38 each, he pockets $1.15 billion. He will remain Facebook's largest shareholder, will more than 32 percent of Facebook's total shares. At the $38 share price, his stake in the company is worth $19.1 billion.

Zuckerberg will control the company with 56 percent of its voting stock as a result of agreements he has with other shareholders who promise to vote his way.

HEDGE FUND VIEW: HE'S IN

Andrew Schneider, a hedge fund adviser and CEO of San Francisco-based Schneider Family Office, was busy selling shares of Apple and LinkedIn on Thursday to free up cash for buying Facebook.

He planned to spend at least $20 million, or 8 percent of his firm's liquid assets.

"You've got 900 million users, and you've got real solid revenue, and the company is earning money," Schneider says.

He's not concerned about plowing such a large proportion into one company: "We feel very strongly and very comfortably about this." Nor is he rattled by General Motors' announcement that it would stop buying display ads on Facebook. He calls that "a very, very small amount."

Schneider points out that there were naysayers when Google went public in 2004, priced at $85 a share. It closed Thursday at $630.

"A lot of people went on the short side of Google when it opened," says Schneider, who is also CEO of Global Hedge Fund Advisors. "And boy, were they wrong."

HEDGE FUND VIEW: STEERING CLEAR

Whitney Tilson says his hedge fund, T2 Partners, avoids newly public companies as a rule because companies tend to go public only when things are going well.

T2 Partners prefers to look for battered stocks that it can scoop up cheaply. It bought more stock in JCPenney this week. Tilson admits, though, that avoiding initial public offerings doesn't always work. Google, he says, "turned out to be a great deal."

Tilson said he expects Facebook's stock will rise over the long term. Facebook, he says, "does look and smell a lot like Google."

Military Sees Spike in Reported Mental Health Disorders

A startling number of active duty troops are being hospitalized for mental health disorders but it may be a positive trend.

According to a new report by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, nearly 22,000 active duty service members were hospitalized for mental health issues in 2011.

That's a 19 percent increase in just one year. Repeated long deployments and prolonged combat stress take their toll.

Air Force Veteran Kurt Schwab, who now lives in San Diego, says his PTSD was overwhelming. A C130 load master, memories of combat flights haunted him and in 2006 he tried to take his own life.

"When I came home I had no family backing, no friends, I didn't have a job. I was afraid to go out and talk to people - I was afraid that I might bother them, so I stayed inside," said Schwab.

CDR Ronald Burbank heads in-patient mental health care at Naval Medical Center San Diego.

He says the national trend does match what he's seen in San Diego, but it may mean more troops are getting help.

"My hope is this is a good thing - that it's because we have gotten the awareness out, and that patients and troops are more comfortable with coming into mental health, and that there is less fear that it might negatively impact their career."

CDR Burbank says coming in early can improve the success of treatment, and despite the stigma - careers have been saved.

"Our ultimate goal is fitness for duty, and so our first goal is doing all we can do to help that patient be a functional member in the command", said Burbank.

Kurt Schwab got treatment for his PTSD, and now he's healthy. He now leads the organization ?Veterans of Operation Iraqi/Enduring Freedom? and helps other veterans. He says awareness is key.

"I see the public is actually starting to see the symptoms and recognize the symptoms. And when they recognize or see the symptoms - then they finally take that step and get the help that the folks are needing."

Dr. Burbank says some signs that a person may be suffering a mental health disorder include: loss of interest in hobbies, trouble sleeping or with concentration, or even changes in appetite. He says the first step in getting help is to consult with your general practitioner who can refer you for appropriate care.

When Europe?s finance ministers meet for a group photo, it?s easy to spot the rebel ? Anders Borg has a ponytail and earring. What actually marks him out, though, is how he responded to the crash. While most countries in Europe borrowed massively, Borg did not. Since becoming Sweden?s finance minister, his mission has been to pare back government. His ?stimulus? was a permanent tax cut. To critics, this was fiscal lunacy ? the so-called ?punk tax cutting? agenda. Borg, on the other hand, thought lunacy meant repeating the economics of the 1970s and expecting a different result.

Three years on, it?s pretty clear who was right. ?Look at Spain, Portugal or the UK, whose governments were arguing for large temporary stimulus,? he says. ?Well, we can see that very little of the stimulus went to the economy. But they are stuck with the debt.? Tax-cutting Sweden, by contrast, had the fastest growth in Europe last year, when it also celebrated the abolition of its deficit. The recovery started just in time for the 2010 Swedish election, in which the Conservatives were re-elected for the first time in history.

?Everybody was told ?stimulus, stimulus, stimulus?,? he says ? referring to the EU, IMF and the alphabet soup of agencies urging a global, debt-fuelled spending splurge. Borg, an economist, couldn?t work out how this would help. ?It was surprising that Europe, given what we experienced in the 1970s and 80s with structural unemployment, believed that short-term Keynesianism could solve the problem.? Non-economists, he says, ?might have a tendency to fall for those kinds of messages?.

He continued to cut taxes and cut welfare-spending to pay for it; he even cut property taxes for the rich to lure entrepreneurs back to Sweden. The last bit was the most unpopular, but for Borg, economic recovery starts with entrepreneurs. If cutting taxes for the rich encouraged risk-taking, then it had to be done. ?In most cases, the company would not have been created without the owner,? he says. ?There would be no Ikea without [Ingvar] Kamprad. We would not have Tetra-Pak without [Ruben] Rausing. They are probably the foremost entrepreneurs we have had in the last few decades, and both moved out of Sweden.?

But they were not rich, I say, when they were starting out. ?No, but they were becoming rich. If you have a high wealth tax and an inheritance tax, people emigrate because it becomes too costly to own a company. Ownership is a production factor. Entrepreneurs are a production factor. Yes, these people are rich and you can obviously argue that we want to encourage social cohesion. But it is also problematic if you drive out entrepreneurs from your country, because they are the source of job creation.?

What even Borg did not expect was that his tax cut for the low-paid would increase economic growth so much that it has almost entirely paid for itself. Borg had created something that Osborne?s critics say does not exist: a self-financing tax cut. ?There was some criticism at the time that we were borrowing to finance tax cuts,? he says. But Sweden could do it, because it was expecting to return to surplus soon; Britain has no such luxury, he says. His main advice to Osborne is: ?Keep on dealing with the deficit, because deficits destroy everything else.?

This ought to be game, set and match. Perfect policy, entrepreneurially based and no fiscal stimulus. It should become the model for everyone else but for reasons seriously unknown will not prove to be.
